Burnout Revenge

Rated E – Some Violence

About The Game: Since its inception, the Burnout series of racing games have always forsook the realism of games like Gran Turismo for sheer, unadulterated fun. Those wishing to cause mayhem on the racetrack as opposed to setting up cars and trying to avoid crashing instantly fell in love. My Xbox 360 came packaged with one of the newer games in the series, Burnout Revenge, which is an Xbox 360 update to the older title of the same name.

How Does It Look?: Right away, on the game intro, it makes no bones about being intended for an HDTV audience. It did appear somewhat blurry on my television but not enough to take away from the overall fun factor. The text is legible, I could read everything fine, but it is slightly fuzzy around it’s edges. I played with the ‘game’ picture setting, which looked fine aside from the aforementioned blurriness, I tried manual and adjusted the sharpness but it didn’t help much.

Also, the game falls victim to what Xbox Magazine calls, “Light Bloom Overkill,” which means that they use an overly bright light source. This is quite distracting and could hamper the enjoyment of the game for SDTV owners, more so than those who have HDTV’s.

How Does It Sound: Nice explosions, good punk rock tunes, everything is well done on the sound front.

To Sum It Up: With all that said, Burnout Revenge is still an incredibly fun game that’s worth a discount purchase. It can be found at most online shops for roughly $29.99. If the aforementioned graphical woes make you nervous about dropping some cash, I’d recommend a rental first, but it’s really not that bad. The fun more than makes up for its faults.

I have this game for the older Xbox and it was super fun. I loved the soundtrack. I wonder if the 360 version is any different?

Hey, cool site. I am also a new school gamer on a old school television as of this Christmas. I look forward to your review of Gears of War (which I’m sure is coming soon) personally I thought the game looked and player terrific except reading text (like the subtitles) on my 27″ non-HD T.V was nearly impossible, and if you mix that with some often hard to hear voice acting (I don’t understand why the background music has to be so loud during cut scenes) and I found that I missed the odd line here or there. I mean who wants to squint at tiny, and i mean tiny, text when the images on screen are so beautiful.

Hey Nice review. I have to disagree about the maybe renting first. I was personally wowed by the graphics on this game and how much fun it was, and I think that there isn’t enough of a problem to stop anyone really enjoying the game.
Also on a side note, I have a 17″ seven year old TV, and a 20″ thirty year old TV, so between the small size of the one, and the poor picture quality of the other, it’s hard to decide which is worse to play on. :P

Burnout Revenge is good looking on both the XBOX and XBOX 360. Playing it on SDTV has to be a pain in the butt as when you are doing “oncoming” (which you do all the time right?) its hard to notice cars coming. I have noticed that in both SDTV and HDTV, but alas it is less noticeable in HDTV. I actually have this issue with all driving games. They seem to be making us drive faster and faster and that means traffic is coming at you at a much faster pace (your speed + oncoming car speed = hella fast).

I have both Burnout Revenue and NFS: Most Wanted on XBOX, which I have the component cables and both games now for XBOX 360 with the component cables and a LCD HDTV.

For the detail levels, what you gain from XBOX to XBOX 360?

    - Texture details
    - Frame rate
    - Scenery Details

If you have an HDTV, its worth it to move to XBOX 360. If you still have SDTV, don’t upgrade until you get a HDTV.

    My $0.03!
